Résumé :

Faith Chiu’s (UCL) research explores how speech perception relies on the accurate identification of phonemes within an auditory string. The talk will examine syntagmatic and paradigmatic contrast in phonology and speech perception using preliminary results from two EEG studies with computational modelling. Study 1 investigates paradigmatic contrast in the form of segment identification. Modelling of Mismatch Negativity (MMN) responses to categorical phonemic changes indicates (de)coupling activity in auditory cortices during phoneme identification. Study 2 shows preliminary data for automatic mechanisms for detecting changes in(to) two-consonant strings.
